Evidence and scope
Official pricing and feature pages were checked on October 8, 2026. Speechify, Murf and Descript account access was observed in the earlier session, and an ElevenLabs dashboard was accessible. Those account checks are not audio-quality tests.
We have no saved blind listening study, ten-listener panel or measured Mandarin score supporting the previous version of this article. Those claims have been removed. PlayHT is no longer a current recommendation in this shortlist; old accounts and prices should not be used as proof of a usable service. See the PlayHT migration comparison.
1. ElevenLabs: a voice-first starting point
The official pricing page currently lists:
| Plan | Regular monthly price | Shared monthly credits | Relevant documented features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10,000 | Text to speech and limited Studio access |
| Starter | $6 | 30,000 | Commercial licence, instant cloning, more Studio projects |
| Creator | $22 | 121,000 | Professional cloning and additional credits |
| Pro | $99 | 600,000 | Higher allowance and additional audio-output options |
Temporary first-month discounts are separate from these regular prices. Credits are shared across products, and the conversion to minutes depends on the model and generation usage. Rewriting and regenerating lines can consume more credits than the final video’s duration suggests.
Good fit: A creator who primarily needs narration files for an existing editing workflow. Use Free to evaluate a short sample; the pricing page explicitly introduces the commercial licence on Starter, so do not assume Free output has the same rights.
2. Murf: check Studio and API separately
Murf’s pricing page separates API, Studio and Dub. The retrieved default view exposed API pricing, not a dependable current Studio subscription table. We therefore do not repeat the older Basic $26 or Creator $56 figures.
The API page lists $10 free credits every month, no credit card required for that offer, and pay-as-you-go rates including $0.01 per 1,000 characters for Falcon and $0.03 per 1,000 characters for Gen-2. Those are API character rates, not creator-app minute subscriptions.
Good fit: A voice-over workflow that matches Murf’s listed voice and video integrations. Verify downloads, commercial rights, supported language and paid Studio price in the specific product you use. A free workspace does not establish that commercial export is free.
3. Descript: narration inside an editing workflow
Descript’s pricing comparison lists text-based editing, AI Speech, stock speakers and voice cloning with plan-specific limits. Its Free plan shows 60 media minutes per month, 100 one-time AI credits, and 720p video exports with a watermark.
Media minutes are imported or recorded media allowances, not an interchangeable monthly text-to-speech allowance. Hobbyist, Creator and Business add more media hours and AI credits; verify the current checkout amount because the fetched page did not expose dependable paid prices.
Good fit: Podcast-style videos or projects where editing the transcript is as important as generating a narration line. Check AI Speech availability and voice permissions instead of treating the editor as unlimited voice generation.
4. Amazon Polly: metered synthesis for developers
AWS Polly pricing charges per one million characters outside applicable free allowances:
| Voice type | Published rate |
|---|---|
| Standard | $4 |
| Neural | $16 |
| Generative | $30 |
| Long-Form | $100 |
For a hypothetical 100,000-character script, that is $0.40 Standard or $1.60 Neural, excluding retries, Speech Marks requests and other AWS services. It is an arithmetic example, not a measured project cost or a fixed monthly plan.
Good fit: A technical workflow that generates and caches narration programmatically. AWS signup and free-tier eligibility have their own conditions; do not count Polly as an unlimited, permanent no-card creator app.
Before you publish a monetized video
- Verify the plan’s commercial licence for the generated output, including attribution requirements.
- Use voices you are permitted to use; permission to use software is not permission to impersonate someone.
- Review names, numbers, pauses and pronunciation in the final exported audio.
- Keep script ownership, music rights and YouTube policy checks separate from the voice subscription.
- Budget for revisions and re-generations, not only finished minutes.
