What “free” means in this guide
This is a documentation-based shortlist updated October 8, 2026, not a test of 50 products. Earlier unsupported hourly quotas, performance rankings and “all limits verified” claims have been removed. A free account or accessible editor establishes a way to start; it is not a promise of permanent unlimited usage.
We distinguish recurring free allowances, one-time trial credits, free basic features and paid upgrades. Regional availability and account eligibility still matter. Before adding a card or starting a trial, read the billing screen and cancellation conditions.
Chat and research
1. ChatGPT Free: general assistance
The official pricing page lists $0/month, unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna subject to abuse guardrails, and limited uploads, image creation, voice, research and context. “Unlimited text chats” does not mean unlimited use of every model or tool.
Use it for: Drafting, brainstorming and everyday explanations. Check sources and calculations before relying on an answer. A $0 consumer plan is not free API access for your app.
2. DeepSeek: chat access versus developer billing
The earlier session confirmed access to a DeepSeek account. For a casual chat task, evaluate the interface before funding an API balance. The developer pricing documentation is explicitly metered: input, output, cache status and peak/off-peak hours affect charges.
Use it for: Evaluating a second assistant on your own prompts. We did not measure a permanent chat quota, queue policy or comparative coding score. Do not label its paid API as a free tier because a chat account is accessible.
3. Gemini: an entry point to Google’s assistant
Google’s AI plan comparison describes paid bundles as more, expanded or higher access to Gemini and related apps. Check the Gemini app for the free access available to your account. The paid Google AI Pro bundle is $19.99/month on the retrieved page; it is not free Workspace-wide AI.
Use it for: Evaluating an assistant in your Google workflow. We do not claim “15 app requests/minute” or a fixed weekly-hour allowance; API limits and consumer-app limits are different.
Writing and editing
4. QuillBot Free: short rewrites
The official Free plan includes 125 words per paraphrase, two modes, basic grammar checks and basic summaries. Premium adds expanded rewriting and plagiarism checking; the free paraphraser does not imply a free premium plagiarism allowance.
Use it for: Trying alternative wording while checking that the meaning remains intact. Read longer material yourself rather than relying on a summary as a substitute for the source.
5. LanguageTool: a grammar-focused starting point
The feature comparison offers a free text-field allowance of 2,000 characters, with a larger Premium allowance and more advanced rules. Listed integrations include major browsers and desktop/mobile apps.
Use it for: A short proofreading sample in your preferred language and app. A character limit per field is not a monthly quota; a hosted tool is not automatically an offline privacy guarantee.
6. Hemingway: readability feedback
The web editor highlights long sentences, passive voice and wording that can be simpler. Editor Plus adds AI fixes and advanced grammar checking.
Use it for: Manual editing prompted by visible readability highlights. Keep the free basic editor separate from paid AI rewriting. A low readability grade is not proof of factual accuracy or appropriate tone.
Voice and video
7. ElevenLabs Free: narration samples
The official plan has 10,000 recurring monthly credits, shared across available products. Starter, at a regular $6/month, explicitly adds a commercial licence and instant voice cloning. Do not assume the same rights on Free.
Use it for: A small voice sample before choosing a paid commercial workflow. Credit-to-minute conversions vary, and repeated generations affect your remaining allowance.

8. Descript Free: text-based editing
The official comparison lists 60 media minutes per month, 100 one-time AI credits, and watermarked 720p video export on Free. The media allowance and AI-credit pool are separate.
Use it for: Evaluating transcript-based editing and a small media project. Do not plan an ongoing free AI-video pipeline around credits that do not replenish monthly.
Choose a small stack, not eight subscriptions
Start with one chat tool, one writing checker and a media tool only if your project needs it. Save a non-sensitive test sample, note each allowance and confirm the export format before investing time in a full project. Free tools save money when they fit the task; switching among many mismatched products can cost more time than it saves.
