The contenders
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) is a general assistant: chat, reasoning, code, images, files, memory, and agent work. It searches the web when it judges a question needs it (or when you force search). Its 2026 lineup runs on the GPT-6 family in ChatGPT Work and Codex (GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol) with GPT-5.6 Sol/Luna in chat. Free and $8 Go tiers carry ads; Plus and above are ad-free.
- Perplexity is a citation-first answer engine: every query runs a live web search and returns a synthesized answer with numbered inline citations. Paid plans add a model picker (Sonar plus GPT, Claude, and Gemini options), Deep Research, premium sources (PitchBook, Statista), and Perplexity Computer, its credit-metered agent. Perplexity removed advertising from its consumer product in February 2026.
ChatGPT vs Perplexity pricing (October 2026)
Pricing as of October 2026 (official pricing and help pages):
| Tier | ChatGPT | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 — ads for logged-in adults, limited usage | $0 — 3 Pro searches/day, 1 Research query/mo, citations on every answer |
| Entry paid | Plus: $20/mo (monthly billing only) | Pro: $20/mo, or $17/mo annual (~$200/yr) |
| Power tier | Pro 100: $100 · Pro 200: $200 · Pro 500: $500 (monthly only) | Max: $200/mo ($2,000/yr on the web) |
| Student | — | Education Pro: $10/mo with SheerID verification |
| Team/business | Business Standard $25/seat ($20 annual), Premium $125/seat ($100 annual) | Enterprise Pro $40/seat ($400/yr), Enterprise Max $325/seat |
At the entry tier both cost $20 a month, but the shape differs. ChatGPT Plus is monthly-only and meters heavy use (five-hour and weekly windows on Work and Codex); Perplexity Pro discounts to $17/mo on annual billing. ChatGPT’s Pro ladder ($100/$200/ $500) exists purely to lift usage limits and add pro reasoning; Perplexity’s $200 Max exists to fund agent credits — 10,000 recurring Computer credits a month, versus a one-time 4,000-credit bonus on Pro that expires.
Test setup
We ran 40 queries through ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro in fresh sessions, four batches of ten:
- Breaking news and “what happened this week” facts
- Statistics and policy numbers (budget figures, limits, deadlines)
- Product facts and pricing claims
- Direct “is this claim true?” prompts
For each answer we logged: did it search/were sources cited, does the URL load, does the page actually support the claim, and is the answer correct against the primary source. Then we gave both tools the same 1,500-word research brief to write up, and rated prose quality blind.
Results
| Metric | ChatGPT Plus | Perplexity Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Answers cited by default | 14 / 40 (searched on demand) | 40 / 40 |
| Citation URLs that load | 31 / 34 cited | 78 / 82 cited |
| Citation actually supports the claim | 26 / 34 | 71 / 82 |
| Answers correct vs primary source | 33 / 40 | 34 / 40 |
| Deep-research brief (sources, speed) | 41 sources, stronger synthesis, slower | 49 sources, faster, thinner analysis |
| Writing quality, blind score (1–5) | 4.5 | 3.6 |
Our run tracks the published research. The Tow Center study at Columbia Journalism Review (1,600 queries, eight AI search tools) found Perplexity had the lowest error rate at 37% while ChatGPT Search misidentified 67% of tested sources; a 50-query manual verification test put Perplexity’s “source supports claim” rate at 85% against 76% for browsing-enabled ChatGPT. The structural pattern is consistent: Perplexity’s usual failure is a real link slightly overstated (catchable in ten seconds), while ChatGPT’s is answering from model knowledge with nothing to check.
Where Perplexity wins
- Citations by default: every answer is sourced, not just the ones where the model decides to search.
- Source fidelity: 71/82 supporting citations in our run, and the best error rate (37%) in the Tow Center’s 1,600-query study.
- Model choice on one bill: pick Sonar, GPT, Claude, or Gemini per query on Pro — ChatGPT only serves OpenAI models.
- Annual discount: $17/mo versus ChatGPT Plus’s monthly-only $20.
- No ads: the consumer product dropped advertising in February 2026.
Where ChatGPT wins
- Producing finished work: blind writing score 4.5 vs 3.6 — drafts, rewrites, and analysis arrive closer to usable.
- Depth of toolkit: image generation, voice, canvas-style editing, projects, memory, custom GPTs, and Codex/Work agent sessions in one subscription.
- Long-horizon tasks: Pro tiers remove the five-hour Work/Codex window entirely; Perplexity meters agent work in expiring Computer credits.
- Synthesis quality: on the shared research brief it wrote a tighter argument from fewer sources — better at deciding what matters.
- Coding and reasoning: still clearly ahead for anything that is not retrieval.
Who should pick what
Pick Perplexity if…
- You research for a living — journalism, analysis, market scans, due diligence — and need to click every claim before it ships.
- You ask fast-moving questions: prices, policy dates, recent announcements.
- You want a multi-model chat with search attached, without paying for three chats.
Pick ChatGPT if…
- The deliverable is a document, plan, image, or working code rather than a source list.
- You want one assistant with memory that gets better the longer you use it.
- Your usage is heavy: its Pro ladder and credit system scale higher than Perplexity’s.
Use both free if…
- You verify in Perplexity and create in ChatGPT. The two free tiers cover this split for casual use — the paid upgrades only pay off when the limits bite.
The bottom line
ChatGPT vs Perplexity in 2026 is not a fair fight because they are optimizing for different failures: Perplexity minimizes “you can’t check this”, ChatGPT minimizes “you still have to write it yourself”. Run ten questions through both free tiers this week — five factual, five creative — and the split will be obvious within a session. If you only pay for one, match it to the work you do most days, and re-check prices before renewing: both companies repriced their top tiers within the last month (all figures verified October 4, 2026).
