The catch: how the limits actually work
There is no single “Plus gives you X messages” number. OpenAI publishes estimates per five-hour window that vary by model, and they move during rollouts. Recent published ranges for Plus put GPT-6 Astra at roughly 5–45 messages, GPT-6.1 Sol at about 15–160, GPT-6 Luna at about 350–3,000, with weekly limits layered on top for some features.
Three mechanics drive the burn:
- Model choice is the biggest lever. A frontier reasoning call costs several times what a lightweight one costs, so the same $20 buys 5 messages or 3,000 depending on which model you default to.
- Image generation burns limits 3–5x faster than a comparable text turn, depending on quality and size.
- Tools have their own meters. Uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and Codex can each hit a separate limit before your chat does — you get told in-product when that happens.
When a meter runs dry you wait for the reset, switch to a cheaper model, or — on Plus — buy additional credits instead of upgrading to Pro.
What changed in 2026
- April 26, 2026 — the Sora app shut down. The Sora/Videos API followed on September 24, 2026, with no replacement. ChatGPT no longer generates video at any price; Plus buyers who valued Sora lost a headline feature.
- August 6, 2026 — OpenAI set the free default to GPT-5.6 Luna with unlimited text chats and added a Think button for harder questions, which shrank the Free-vs-Plus gap for plain conversation.
- September 10, 2026 — new sign-ups and upgrades to Pro $200 paused.
- September 29, 2026 — a third Pro usage tier ($500/mo) appeared above the $100 and $200 options.
- October 14, 2026 — GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on all plans.
We ran the math
- Real price: $20/mo, monthly only. That is $0.67 per calendar day or $240 a year — cheaper than one mid-range dinner a month, and there is no annual discount to chase (annual billing exists only on Business).
- The step from Go: $8 → $20 is +$12/mo. Go already lifts every free-tier tool allowance substantially (OpenAI publishes no fixed multiplier); Plus adds the GPT-6 reasoning tier, cross-device Work, custom GPTs, and removes ads. If reasoning models are not part of your workflow, $12 of that step buys little.
- Versus pay-as-you-go: frontier reasoning on the API runs to roughly $10 input / $50 output per million tokens for the top tier — a handful of long reasoning sessions can exceed $0.67/day on their own, before images, voice, or research. At real multimodal usage the flat $20 wins comfortably.
- Versus Free: Free is genuinely unlimited for text. The honest way to value Plus is the tools: if you never touch image, voice, deep research, uploads, or Codex, the marginal value is close to zero.
- The video line item: Plus used to bundle Sora. With Sora retired, anyone whose $20 was partly a video budget should re-price the plan — the rest of the bundle still stands.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it for you?
Stay on Free if… you mostly chat, search, and occasionally upload a file. Unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna text plus a Think button covers that, and ads are the price of admission.
Pay for Go ($8) if… you hit tool limits every week but skip reasoning models: materially more uploads, images, and voice than Free for $8, still ad-supported.
Pay for Plus ($20) if… any two hold: you use reasoning models most weekdays; you generate images or talk to ChatGPT by voice regularly; you run deep research or Codex; you want ChatGPT Work on web and mobile; custom GPTs and scheduled tasks are part of how you work. Also the simplest ad-free entry point.
Move to Pro ($100+) only if… you exhaust Plus’s meters daily and buying credits each month has averaged more than $80. Treat that as a diagnosed bottleneck, not an upgrade — and note the $200 tier is closed to new sign-ups.
Money-saving moves
- Start on Free or Go — the meters reset anyway; upgrade only when a specific limit blocks you repeatedly.
- Default to Luna — reserve GPT-6 reasoning for genuinely hard tasks; it is the single biggest quota lever.
- Batch image work — images burn 3–5x faster than text, so generate in fewer, better-specified attempts.
- Buy credits instead of Pro — occasional overflow is cheaper as credits than as a $100 jump.
- Reset on upgrade — hitting a free limit and then upgrading resets your rates immediately, so upgrade at the wall, not in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT Plus include video generation? No. Sora’s app closed on April 26, 2026 and its API on September 24, 2026, and no OpenAI video product has replaced it. Plus still includes image generation, voice, deep research, and Codex.
Is there a fixed Plus message limit? No. OpenAI publishes model-dependent estimates per five-hour window — currently as low as about 5–45 for GPT-6 Astra and into the hundreds for lighter models — plus separate tool meters and possible weekly caps.
Is Plus ad-free? Yes. Ads may appear on Free and Go in certain countries; Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise are ad-free.
Can I buy Plus annually? No — individual plans are monthly-only. Annual billing appears only on Business, at roughly $20 per user per month.
What happens when I hit a limit? You wait for the reset, switch to a lighter model, or extend usage with purchased credits where the plan allows it.
The bottom line
ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo is worth paying for the moment ChatGPT becomes a work tool rather than a chat toy: reasoning models, heavier image and voice limits, deep research, Codex, Work on every device, and no ads. If your usage is casual conversation, the free tier is now embarrassingly capable and you should not pay. Go sits in between at $8 for people who need tool volume but not frontier reasoning — and everyone should recalibrate once, since video left the bundle in 2026.
