Why teams look for Cursor alternatives
Cursor remains the reference AI editor, and its own docs put daily agent users at $60–100/mo once credits run out — which is exactly why people window-shop. We evaluated seven alternatives confirmed alive and on sale in October 2026, running the same three tasks (multi-file refactor, greenfield feature, bug hunt in an unfamiliar repo) and scoring agent depth, editor polish, price value, and model choice.
Pricing as of October 2026 (official pricing pages):
| Alternative | Entry price (Oct 2026) | Free tier | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | Pro $10/mo (Pro+ $39, Max $100) | Yes, limited | Cheapest complete IDE agent |
| Claude Code | Claude Pro $20/mo (Max $100/$200) | No | Terminal-first agentic coding |
| OpenAI Codex | ChatGPT Plus $20/mo | Yes, in ChatGPT Free | OpenAI models in CLI and IDE |
| Windsurf (Devin Desktop) | Pro $20/mo (Max $200) | Yes, light quota | Cursor-like agentic IDE |
| Kiro (AWS) | Pro $20/mo (Pro+ $40, Power $200) | Yes, 50 credits | Spec-driven work, AWS billing |
| Zed AI | Pro $10/mo | Yes (editor, BYOK) | Speed; native editor with AI |
| Cline | Free (BYOK) / ClinePass $9.99/mo | Yes, open source | Any model, zero lock-in |
| Aider | Free (open source) | Yes | Git-native terminal pairing |
Baseline: Cursor itself is Hobby $0, Pro $20/mo, Pro+ $60/mo, Ultra $200/mo.
How we scored
Four dimensions, rated 1–5 from our three tasks:
- Agent depth — could it plan, edit across files, run commands, and recover from errors?
- Editor/UX polish — completions, chat, diffs, and how much setup was required.
- Price value — what the seat costs against what you actually get, free tier included.
- Model choice — frontier options, open-weight options, and bring-your-own-key freedom.
Results
| Tool | Agent | Polish | Value | Models | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | 4.3 | 4.3 | 5.0 | 4.8 | 4.5 |
| Cline | 4.2 | 4.0 | 4.7 | 5.0 | 4.4 |
| Windsurf / Devin Desktop | 4.5 | 4.4 | 3.6 | 4.6 | 4.3 |
| OpenAI Codex | 4.5 | 4.0 | 4.7 | 3.5 | 4.2 |
| Kiro (AWS) | 4.2 | 4.2 | 3.8 | 4.4 | 4.2 |
| Claude Code | 5.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 3.0 | 4.1 |
| Zed AI | 3.4 | 4.9 | 4.6 | 4.0 | 4.1 |
| Aider | 3.8 | 2.8 | 4.9 | 5.0 | 4.1 |
| Cursor (baseline) | 4.7 | 4.7 | 3.8 | 4.7 | 4.5 |
Reading the table: nobody beats Cursor on raw agent-plus-editor polish, and Copilot beats it on price by half. Claude Code scores the highest agent mark (5.0) but ships in a terminal, not an editor, and locks you to Anthropic models.
The case for each
GitHub Copilot — best overall
$10/mo buys unlimited completions, agent mode, chat, CLI, and code review, metered by GitHub AI Credits (1,500 on Pro, 1 credit = $0.01, overage purchasable) since the June 2026 usage-based billing switch. Free tier is real (2,000 completions/mo); Business seats are $19. Soft spot: model selection is broad but auto-routed, not yours to tune.
Claude Code — best agent
Top agent score (5.0): it read our unfamiliar repo best, planned multi-step refactors, and self-corrected from test failures. Included with Claude Pro at $20/mo (Max at $100/$200 for 5x/20x usage), with usage shared across Claude chat and the terminal and no free tier. Terminal-only, Anthropic models only — but those are the best in class for code.
OpenAI Codex — best free entry
Included in every ChatGPT plan including Free; Go ($8/mo) and Plus ($20/mo) add real quotas, with token-based Codex credits since April 2026. CLI, IDE extension, desktop, and cloud tasks. The zero-cost start makes it the default for students; heavy autonomous runs are where credits bite.
Windsurf — now Devin Desktop, best Cursor-like IDE
Same category as Cursor: VS Code fork, Cascade-style agent, deep codebase indexing, unlimited Tab completions. Cognition folded it into Devin Desktop in June 2026 — windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai. Free, Pro $20/mo, Max $200/mo, Teams $80/mo plus $40 per full seat, with daily/weekly quotas and overage at API rates. Smaller community than Cursor; three renames (Codeium → Windsurf → Devin) make reviews confusing.
Kiro (AWS) — best for spec-driven teams
Amazon’s agent IDE (GA May 2026) turns a prompt into written specs — requirements, design, tasks — before touching code. Free tier (50 credits), Pro $20, Pro+ $40, Pro Max $100, Power $200 per user/mo; extra credits $0.04 each. Sits on Bedrock, bills through your AWS account, adds IP indemnity on paid tiers. Less flashy than Cursor, far more comfortable in a procurement review.
Zed AI — best native editor
Blazing-fast Rust/GPUI editor with AI built in: Personal free (bring your own key or external agent), Pro $10/mo with unlimited edit predictions and $5 of hosted tokens included, then usage at API list +10%; Business $30/seat/mo. Weakest agentic depth of the paid tools (3.4) — Zed is for when editor speed matters as much as the agent.
Cline — best open-source, no lock-in
Apache-2.0 agent running in VS Code, JetBrains, CLI, or desktop with any model — Claude, GPT, Gemini, local Ollama/LM Studio, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The tool is $0; you pay providers directly, or skip keys with ClinePass at $9.99/mo ($4.99 first month) for curated open-weight models (GLM, Kimi, DeepSeek, Qwen). Model freedom scored 5.0.
Aider — best free terminal pair
Open-source, git-native CLI: edits files, auto-commits, works with any model endpoint. $0 for the software, API spend only (a few dollars a day on frontier models, near zero on cheap or local ones). No editor chrome, weak UX (2.8) — but it is the survivor of the open-source terminal class and costs nothing to try.
The graveyard: verify before you buy
Three names dominate older “Cursor alternatives” lists and are gone as of October 2026: Codeium (the old autocomplete extension — codeium.com now redirects to devin.ai; it lives on as Windsurf/Devin), Aide (sunsetted by Codestory), and Void (officially deprecated, repository archived — forks exist, the project does not). Gemini CLI consumer sign-in also ended June 18, 2026. If a comparison recommends those as active products, it has not been checked recently.
Free-tier reality check
- Codex in ChatGPT Free: the only genuine agent at $0 — enough for light tasks.
- Copilot Free: 2,000 completions/mo plus limited chat/agent, auto model only.
- Cline + Aider: $0 software, bring a key — cheap models or local inference keeps spend near zero.
- Zed Personal and Windsurf Free: usable daily drivers with quotas.
- Do not pay for a second coding subscription while one free tier covers your session volume.
Pick by persona
| If you are… | Pick |
|---|---|
| On a tight budget, want everything in one seat | GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo) |
| Agent-first, terminal-native, best code quality | Claude Code on Claude Pro ($20/mo) |
| Already paying OpenAI | Codex (included) |
| Leaving Cursor but wanting its feel | Windsurf / Devin Desktop ($20/mo) |
| An AWS shop or a regulated team | Kiro (from $20/mo) |
| An editor snob who wants speed first | Zed AI ($10/mo) |
| Allergic to vendor lock-in | Cline (free) or Aider (free) |
The bottom line
Cursor alternatives in 2026 split into three honest options: pay less for a comparable seat (Copilot at $10, Cline at $0), move the agent to the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Aider), or trade editors entirely (Windsurf/Devin, Zed, Kiro). Run your next task in two of them on the same repo — most developers find the winner in an afternoon, and the switching cost is a settings import, not a migration.
