Affiliate disclosure: We may earn a commission through our Frase referral link. Other vendor links on this page are official pricing sources, not referral links.

You look for a Frase alternative for one of four reasons: you want a cheaper entry point, you need a team editing workflow rather than a solo content loop, you only need on-page scoring instead of research-plus-drafting, or you already pay for a full SEO suite and refuse to buy a second tool.

Every price below was read from the vendor’s own pricing page. This is documented packaging research, not a measured ranking test — we did not run a controlled optimization experiment, so treat scores and claims as vendor statements, not our findings.

Quick comparison

1. Frase: the baseline being replaced

Frase’s pricing page lists Starter at $39/mo yearly or $49/mo monthly, one seat, one site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages per month. Professional moves to $103/mo yearly with three seats, five sites, 40 articles and 250 audit pages; optional overages are off by default.

The documented workflow covers research, drafting, SEO and GEO scores, publishing integrations and decay monitoring. That makes it worth pricing out when hopping between separate tools is the actual frustration. It does not prove generated text needs no fact-checking, and a higher on-page score does not prove a citation.

Watch the boundary: Starter holds at its cap. White-label reporting is Enterprise-only. The seven-day trial is capped at 5 articles, 50 audit pages and 25 AI prompts.

Full tier-by-tier limits are in our Frase pricing guide.

2. Surfer SEO: optimization without the drafting loop

Surfer’s pricing page shows Discovery at $49/mo paid yearly with 120 annual documents, Standard at $99 and Pro at $182, each with 360 annual documents. Annual credits reset yearly, not monthly.

Watch the boundary: a lower monthly-equivalent figure is not a smaller commitment — annual credits are prepaid and reset once a year. Surfer is the closer match when you want scoring and briefs on content you already produce elsewhere.

3. Clearscope: shared editorial work

Clearscope Essentials lists 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 monthly topic explorations and 20 monthly drafts at $129/month. Business is $399 with more tracking capacity. Every listed plan has unlimited users and projects.

Watch the boundary: unlimited users does not mean unlimited drafts or pages. Check add-on pricing and the actual free-start conditions instead of assuming a fourteen-day trial.

Clearscope is the pick when several editors share one workspace and per-seat cost would dominate the bill.

4. NeuronWriter: the smaller analysis budget

NeuronWriter Bronze lists two projects, 25 content analyses and 15,000 AI credits at $23 monthly or $19/month on yearly billing. Gold adds collaboration, integrations and API access at $69 monthly or $57 on yearly billing.

Watch the boundary: analyses and AI credits are different counters. The official FAQ describes a seven-day trial under Gold terms — a limited trial is not a standing free plan.

This is the cheapest path into a scored content editor, which is exactly why the quota definitions matter more than the sticker price.

5. PageOptimizer Pro: one-off on-page reports

POP Basic is $40/month with 20 POP credits. Unlimited is $72/month; the annual offer lists $739 paid annually, roughly $62/month.

Watch the boundary: the page advertises a seven-day refund guarantee. That is a post-payment condition, not a no-card trial. Unlimited reports are subject to fair usage.

POP suits a consultant running periodic audits rather than a monthly publishing operation.

6. MarketMuse: topic-level planning

MarketMuse Free offers one user and ten queries per month, with no site inventory or content briefs. Paid Optimize, Research and Strategy tiers add inventories, tracked topics and briefs.

Watch the boundary: we did not expose dependable paid amounts on the page checked on October 8, 2026, so this comparison does not quote one. Do not reuse an old $99 figure as a current price. Free queries are not equivalent to a paid inventory-based strategy.

7. Scalenut: GEO production and monitoring

Scalenut’s page lists Starter $59, Plus $89 and Professional $199 on monthly billing. The annual view advertises a limited $24/$36/$80 offer with increased capacity. Starter’s ordinary monthly view lists five articles and ten tracked prompts refreshed weekly.

Watch the boundary: promotional prices and ordinary monthly packaging differ. Verify the checkout term and renewal amount before calling a limited offer an entry price.

8. Semrush: a broader suite

The current Semrush page lists SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced offerings. Keyword research, rank tracking, audits and competitor tools answer a different purchase question from a standalone content editor.

Watch the boundary: choose it when you actually need those additional jobs. This check did not expose dependable base prices, so we do not quote one here, and it does not establish that any tool’s data is universally more accurate than another’s.

Which one to pick

Pick Frase when you want research, drafting, scoring, publishing and decay monitoring in one loop, and your volume fits 10, 40 or 100 articles a month.

Pick Surfer when the writing happens elsewhere and you only need scoring and briefs at volume.

Pick Clearscope when multiple editors share one workspace and unlimited seats matter more than the entry price.

Pick NeuronWriter when the budget is the constraint and a scored editor is the whole requirement.

Pick POP or MarketMuse when you need periodic reports or topic planning rather than a monthly production tool.

Pick Scalenut when GEO monitoring and production are the job.

Pick Semrush when you already need a full SEO suite and content tooling is one line item inside it.

Before paying anywhere, match three things: how each quota is counted, how much commitment the billing requires, and whether exports and white-labeling are included or sold separately.

The bottom line

Frase is not the cheapest entry and not the broadest suite — it is the middle path where research, drafting and monitoring share one quota. Price your real monthly volume against each tool’s own counter, not against a headline monthly figure, and re-check every price before annual billing; this category repriced more than once in the last year.
